So, since I am watching "The Majestic" on DVD this afternoon I think its great place to start with my Film reviews.
Let me start out by saying that I really love this movie, for multiple reasons. First and foremost being that its a Film ABOUT the film industry, more specifically the Red Scare and Black Listing practices that took place in Hollywood in the 1950's. It's Directed, expertly, by Frank Darabont who is most Famously known for directing the Stephen King adaptions of "Shawshank Redemtion" and "the Green Mile". the man can direct a period piece like nobody's bussiness. And I am a huge Stephen King fan to start with, so the fact that he directed two awesome adaptions, makes me a fan by default.
The other amazing thing about this Film is the completely underrated performance of the star Jim Carrey. In a career known for some truely bizarre comic performances, it's his serious roles that stand out the most. But somehow this is the least recognized of his serious roles. Granted "The Truman Show" and "Man on the Moon" were also really amazing and deserve the praise.
This Fim often reminds me of a gag from a"Simpsons" episode that originally aired in 1995 entitled "Lisa's Wedding". In the episode we are granted a vision of the future (2010 funnily enough), where Lisa is attending Oxford University, and during her courtship with her future husband (pun intended) they attend a film Festival of "40 Classic Films of Jim Carrey", and Lisa comment how misunderstood and "Magical" his career is. The Gag is supposed to be ironic, but I always site "the Majestic" as the proof that it is, in fact true. The man is a genuis.
So that's why its one of my top ten favorite films of all time, and why I picked up a copy of it today in a pawn shop for 5 bucks. See its out of print on DVD and the other copy , that my brother got me at a used movie shop in Colorado is scratched all to shit. Now i can enjoy this movie anytime, and shre it with people.
All in alll. Not a bad day
